Pediatric Eye Exams

As parents, you want the best for our kids, and that includes making sure they have healthy eyes. If you have children in school, it may be important to make sure they are getting regular eye exams. Most kids will have their vision checked when they are in school, but if your child is having trouble seeing the board or has trouble reading, it's a good idea to take them in for an eye exam.

.

At Lake Murray Optometric Center serving SD or San Diego, CA, El Cajon, CA, and La Mesa, CA, we offer comprehensive pediatric eye exams because we understand the importance of kids having healthy vision. We also offer a wide selection of kids glasses, so if your child does need a prescription, we can help them find a pair that they love.

How Pediatric Eye Exams Work

You might be wondering what happens during a pediatric eye exam. Below are a few things you can expect when you bring your child into see our eye doctor.

During the exam, our doctor will:

  • Check your child's vision: We can use a series of tests to make sure your child can see clearly. These may include reading an eye chart, using a light to check for eye health, and looking at the eyes with a magnifying glass.
  • Check for any eye health problems: Many people assume eye health problems are only for older adults, but that's not necessarily true. We evaluate your child's eyes for any health concerns and can refer you to a specialist if needed. Dilation may be needed to fully evaluate the health of your child's retina and optic nerve.
  • Test for refractive errors: This is how we help determine if your child needs prescription glasses or contact lenses. We will use a machine called a phoropter to test for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Myopia control is a common need for children. This means your child can see things up close but not so much far away.

After the exam, an eye doctor on our team can go over the results with you and answer any questions you have. Going to an eye doctor for the first time can be nerve-wracking but the peace of mind may be well worth it. Taking your children to an eye doctor can help them have a better chance to succeed in school as well.
