Causes of Myopia

Anyone can develop myopia in their life, but it is often hereditary. Therefore, if a parent is nearsighted, the chances of their child being nearsighted as well is relatively high. The risk increases much more if both parents are nearsighted.

Aside from running in the family, it has been shown that children who spend too much time indoors and not enough outdoors are at a higher risk of developing myopia. This is likely due to too much screen time or reading with the book too close to their face.

Symptoms of Myopia

As previously mentioned, nearsightedness makes it to where objects in the distance are blurry. Aside from blurriness, some other symptoms of myopia may include:

  • Eye strain
  • Excessive blinking
  • Squinting
  • Frequent rubbing of the eyes
  • Sitting in the front of the classroom or closer to the TV
  • Not being aware of objects in the distance

Diagnosing and Treating Myopia

Myopia can be diagnosed during an annual eye exam. If you or your child are unable to see the letters or pictures clearly on the eye chart, our eye doctor can recommend the appropriate myopia control treatment methods.

When it comes to treating myopia, there are a few measures that can be taken. These include atropine eye drops, orthokeratology (special contacts worn at night), or multifocal prescription contact lenses. For severe cases of myopia, LASIK is an option if you’re a candidate though you or your child needs to be above eighteen to be a LASIK candidate.
